You might be wondering what that hashtag means right? Well, Google is the God of the Internet. But that too wouldn’t give you the right results. Though it does give you results. Those might not be the results you might want. And if you were smart enough to google it, and you somehow are right now trying to connect HTML5 and DEFCON (Defense Condition), stop right there; because that’s not what this is about. I don’t think I can suddenly go all military overnight. This has nothing to do with military or defense.

There’s this awesome conference that I am helping to organize along with a few Mozillians from Mozilla Kerala. It’s named HTML5/JS Developer Conference 2014. Initially, we had #html5conf as the social media hastag. But then Christian “codepo8” Heilmann pointed out that the hashtag was confusing with another event/website. That put us into a dilemma. We had to find another social media hashtag that hadn’t been used on the 3 most popular social networking sites – facebook, twitter and google+. And that wasn’t an easy job. While we were looking for a hashtag for social media marketing, we couldn’t find any. We had a very hard time finding a hashtag that wasn’t used at all. And it was jsx that came up with this one. He knew it was a defense condition. But he thought that it wouldn’t be on social media since it was used more popularly in the US Armed Forces. He pointed out the fact along with the suggestion. He also thought that it sounded similar to “DevConf”. Everyone thought it was cool and it filled in our criterion too. (Damn! why didn’t I get the idea before jsx 😛 ) And that’s how it became the official social media hashtag for the event. And the title of my post ;).

Well, HTML5/JavaScript Developer Conference 2014 is the first-of-its-kind Developers’ Conference that is happening in South India. Developer Conferences happen all around the world. Mostly in the United States. But they seldom come to India, and even when they do, they don’t come all the way to the southern part of India. This gave jsx the idea to bring a developers’ conference especially for the developer community of the southern part of India. This is how the idea was born. The event is happening in Kochi on April 12-13, 2014. The event will be an awesome platform for web developers and designers to meet and network with people of similar wavelengths.

Date : April 12-13, 2014
Time : 09:00AM-05:00PM
Venue : XIME, Kalamassery, Kochi

The event will be featuring sessions from various fields of HTML5 and JavaScript. Experts on the field will be talking on various topics. Sessions include The Convergence of Web Browser and Operating System, The Future of Web Graphics, EmberJS, Javascript Robotics and many more. We have Nick “LostOracle” Desaulniers who will be flying in from Mountain View, California, USA to talk on “The Convergence of Browser and Operating System” on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Our very own Praveen “psbots” Sridhar will be showing off his speciality – JavaScript Robotics on Sunday itself.

Mozilla and Mozilla Kerala are big players in this event. We have volunteers from Mozilla Kerala in the organizing committee and then there’s Mozilla sponsoring 90% of the event and a speaker too. We also have Opera Software, Codeyssus Labs, Toobler Technologies, and a few others as sponsors. We’re still open to sponsors.

More information on the event regarding registration, sessions, agenda, etc is posted on the event’s website : http://html5conf.in/.
