It’s a New Year!

It’s a brand New Year. Happy New Year 2015!

It’s another new year. Another year in life. Its normal for people to take “new year” resolutions every year, and not keep them too. I’m a similar person. I used to take resolutions every new year. The most that I’ve kept up my resolutions was 1 month. I have never been able to keep my resolutions. So, 2 years ago, I decided to stop taking resolutions and just take decisions. I’d take decisions to reach a particular target in the following year. If that didn’t happen, the target would get postponed. Its not like someone is forcing anyone to take resolutions and then keep them, but still. Its another new year and I have no resolutions for this year either.

The past year was a very eventful year for me. It is exactly one year today that I started blogging publicly (until then, I used to blog only in my mind). It is the year that I involved myself with mozilla. It is the year that I got to know more about Free, Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) and became a FLOSS enthusiast. It is the year that I became more cautious about my privacy on the web (Digital Privacy). There are so many things that happened this year that changed my life in a different way. One can say that the past year was like a turning point in my life, except that I didn’t turn around, just chose a different path to lead.

Right now, being a FLOSS enthusiast, I look forward to a life without closed, proprietary corporates snooping over my shoulder. I’m attempting to live without any of the evils of the world – Facebook, WhatsApp, Microsoft and of course, the evilest of them all – Google. I was of the notion that one cannot live without Google, and I always exempted Google from my blacklist. Though, it still is not possible for a normal person to live on the web without Google, it certainly is possible to do so virtually, though I have to admit that it is not as easy for anyone and everyone. You’d need some very good experience with web hosting and stuff to get there. But my attempt this year is to isolate everything closed or proprietary. But then again, I’m not a hard-core extremist like Richard M Stallman is. So, I’ll always have a hypocrite side behind my back too. But as much as possible, I’ll try to be as free and open as possible. And when I say ‘free’, it means free as in free speech and not free beer or gratis.

Its better to know what you’re doing and sharing, than to blindly believe someone you don’t even know to treat your data with as much care as you would do to your own.

So, in short, my target for this year (or maybe for 2016 too) is to be completely “free and open” – using only FLOSS technologies for everything I do related to technology – which is basically EVERYTHING I do.

My First Shell Script for Ubuntu Linux

It might not be a big thing for most people, especially developers. But for a wanna-be programmer like me, a first time is something big.

I built my first shell script for Ubuntu Linux over night – the best time I get to code. Well, though it isn’t basically much of logical codes with a flow of control, it is more echo statements than anything else. I wrote approximately 300 lines of code in a night. Working in the Night is More Productive

I have always believed that working late into the night would bring productive results. I have experienced it first-hand too. That is the only time when you are free from all distractions; when you can concentrate and get more thing things done than you do during the day. I’ve always been a night-guy and I’m proud of it. I’ve found myself to be more productive in the night than during the day. I love travelling at night; Taking long walks in the shadows of the nights and loving the silence of the night under the moon. I came across this article on Elite Daily by Lauren Martin. i would say it defines me so much. I can relate to everything the author has said in her post. I wanted to actually re-blog the post, but since that option was unavailable, I decided to re-post it in my own blog. This is how it goes : Continue reading “Working in the Night is More Productive”

Karma ’14 – Day 1

Taking sessions is fun. When Amjad first invited me unofficially on January 2 via facebook to speak for Karma – the cultural cum technical fest of KMCT College of Engineering, I was really excited because talking on a stage of a technical fest is really an experience. It’s not like I haven’t got on stage before, but this was going to be my first professional stage talking to a professional audience (or so I thought 😛 ). Continue reading “Karma ’14 – Day 1”

A Fresh New Start!

Hi, It’s a perfect time to start something/anything new. It’s the start of another brand new year of the Georgian Calendar. First of all, Happy New Year Folks. 🙂

New Year 2014
Happy New Year 2014 Folks 🙂

Well, I believe everyone starts blogging with an introduction of themselves. I feel it’s simply because they have nothing to express. Atleast that is my case. I’ve been having this idea of maintaining a blog for a long time, but I never had any specific topic to talk about. But then I realized I was kinda good at content writing and reviewing. I finally decided that I MUST start speaking out for my own. And I believe I need to start atleast now. Better late, than never right? 😉 So, as everybody, I too, am going to start “blogging” by introducing myself.

My name is shine. I hail from the state of India which is more commonly and widely known as “God’s Own Country“.  Officially known as ‘Kerala‘, the Malayalam (മലയാളം) speaking state is a hub of budding talent in every field under the sun. It is one state in India that claims 100% literacy (that is because many other states in India are still struggling to educate themselves).
